Media Release: COVID-19 vaccinations for children 6 months to under 5 years begin on Thursday

Hastings and Prince Edward Counties/ July 27, 2022

Starting tomorrow, July 28 at 8 a.m., parents and caregivers of children six months to under five years of age can begin booking appointments for the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine. Hastings Prince Edward Public Health will also be holding walk-in clinics for this age group only.

Children aged six months to under five years old will receive the pediatric Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, which is a slightly modified, lower dose (half the amount given to children aged six to 11), in a two-dose series at a recommended interval of eight weeks between first and second doses. The pediatric COVID-19 vaccine should be given 14 days before or after a different vaccine and children who have had COVID-19 should wait at least eight weeks after COVID-19 symptom onset or a positive test to get vaccinated.

Parents or caregivers must provide consent on behalf of the child before or at the time of the appointment, and to receive the vaccine children must already be at least six months old.

“The approval of a pediatric vaccine for the youngest members of our community provides families with an extra layer of protection against COVID-19,” say Dr. Ethan Toumishey, Medical Officer of Health and CEO. “This is another important step forward in our fight against COVID-19 and I encourage everyone to take steps to protect themselves, their loved ones and the community from COVID-19 by continuing to follow public health measures and to get vaccinated. Regardless of age, please stay up-to-date with your vaccinations.”
