Media release: Radon is a health risk: homeowners encouraged to test for radon

Hastings and Prince Edward Counties/Nov. 17, 2023

Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that you can’t see, taste, or smell. It can enter any building which has contact with the ground and in confined spaces, like a home, can build up to elevated levels. Prolonged exposure to elevated levels can become a serious health risk. In fact, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers in Canada.

Take action to protect yourself and your family by testing your home for radon. You can purchase radon test kits online, at select retailers, and from certified radon professionals.  Remember, all homes may have radon gas in them no matter the age or location. When elevated radon levels are detected, a radon mitigation system can be installed to reduce levels to an acceptable range.
