Media Release: Tentative agreement reached between Hastings Prince Edward Public Health and Ontario Nurses’ Association Local 31

Hastings and Prince Edward Counties/October 1, 2023

Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) has reached a tentative agreement with Local 31 of the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA), which represents the nursing staff at HPEPH. ONA staff have been on strike since Aug. 18, 2023.

The agreement becomes final once ratified by the HPEPH Board of Health. Until that time, details of the agreement will remain confidential.

“We are very pleased that we have come to a fair and respectful agreement with ONA,” says Dr. Ethan Toumishey, Medical Officer of Health and CEO. “Nurses are integral to many of the programs and services delivered by HPEPH in the community. With this agreement we have worked to balance the needs of ONA staff with the needs of our other employees, taxpayers, and our clients. We are looking forward to welcoming our valued nurses back to work on Monday October 2, and resuming many of our services.”

While the return of nursing staff will allow gradual resumption of many HPEPH services, several services will not resume fully until an agreement is reached with unionized staff represented by the Canadian Union of Public (CUPE). HPEPH employees represented by CUPE Local 3314 remain on strike. HPEPH continues to wait for a response from CUPE following provision of an offer on Friday September 22, 2023.

HPEPH thanks the community for their patience and understanding during the service disruption. Please view HPEPH’s Service Disruption Notice for the most up to date information about service availability.
