Public Health’s Role in Addressing the Social Determinants of Health: Where Do We Start?

Health is influenced not only by genetic make-up and lifestyle behaviours, but also by living conditions. These conditions, including levels of income and education, social supports, early life experiences, housing, and natural and built environments, are known as the social determinants of health. This evidence summary of published literature completed in August 2017 outlines the actions and key messages for public health in addressing the social determinants of health. The detailed data extraction table is available upon request.
