Statement from the Board of Health

Dr. Ethan Toumishey named Medical Officer of Health for Hastings Prince Edward Public Health

Hastings and Prince Edward Counties/Feb. 1, 2022

The Hastings Prince Edward Board of Health is very pleased to announce that Dr. Ethan Toumishey is the successful candidate in the recruitment process for the new Medical Officer of Health (MOH), subject to Ministry of Health approval.

“Dr. Toumishey’s medical expertise and leadership have been invaluable during his tenure as Acting Medical Officer of Health over the past several months, and we are very pleased that he will continue to lead the team at HPEPH as Medical Officer of Health and CEO,” said Jo-Anne Albert, chair of the Board of Health. “He has demonstrated strong and steady leadership in the face of the pandemic and during the selection process it quickly became evident that he not only has the skills and training necessary for this challenging role, but also has the vision and passion to advocate for public health and the important role it plays in keeping our residents safe and healthy.”

Dr. Toumishey, has been the Acting Medical Officer of Health and CEO at HPEPH since October when Dr. Piotr Oglaza moved to Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington Public Health as their MOH.

Before taking on the Acting MOH role, Dr. Toumishey was hired as the Director of Clinical Programs at HPEPH after completing his residency in Public Health and Preventive Medicine in June 2021.

Dr. Toumishey has a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Ottawa, graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine from Dalhousie University, and completed a Masters in Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Queen’s University and met the requirements for fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in June 2021. He has worked as an independent family physician and is also a guest lecturer at Queen’s University.

South East Health Unit

As of Jan. 1, 2025 Hastings Prince Edward Public Health; Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington Public Health and the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit will merge to form the South East Health Unit.

Partners and members of the public should continue to engage with their local public health offices as usual until otherwise directed.

Efforts are underway to develop branding for the South East Health Unit, which will take several months. In the meantime, you will see logos and other advertising material with Hastings Prince Edward Public Health branding. You may also see some documents using the legal name South East Health Unit.
