Hastings and Prince Edward Counties/Feb. 16, 2024
Sadly, our community, like many across the province, is experiencing increasing rates of drug poisonings as the result of the contaminated unregulated drug supply. Our condolences are extended to the families and friends of our two community members who tragically lost their lives.
As we have seen in recent weeks, the occurrence of drug poisoning continues to place strain on community and health services, and we must work together to identify and implement long-term solutions. Public Health recognizes that for many individuals experiencing addiction, using unregulated substances is not a choice, and we must approach this issue with compassion as we work to address this issue, together with community partners.
Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) is continuing to work closely with our community partners to develop a Community Drug Strategy (CDS), which aims to identify and implement collaborative long-term solutions related to unregulated substances within our community, including for prevention and education, substance use services and supports, data and evidence and substance controls. Creation and implementation of the CDS is a collaborative effort with our partners from inside and outside health sectors, including the police; school boards; community-based services organizations, including those representing Indigenous Peoples; municipalities; and people who have experienced substance issues.
While the CDS aims to identify and implement long-term solutions, we also recognize there is a need for immediate action to address the recent sudden increase in drug poisonings. Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) supports the recent actions to expedite rezoning to allow The Bridge Integrated Care Centre to be established at 1 Alhambra Square. This facility aims to help connect individuals with critical services related to addictions and mental health. However, immediate sustainable funding and resources are required to ensure the success of both The Bridge and the Community Drug Strategy. We are hopeful that elected officials will continue to advocate for ongoing funding to address issues related to addictions and mental health, both in our community and across the province and country.
We are committed to working with community partners to respond to both the current situation, as well as work to implement long-term solutions through the CDS.
